PHONEME /ž/

1. This phoneme is represented by means of the letters <ge,i> and <j>.

2. It is quite usual that the combinations /že/ and /ži/ are spelled <ge> and <gi>, rather than <je>, and <ji>. As a matter of fact, the second combinations are usually kept for words having this spellings in their original form:

general, girafa, gener, borges, passegis, etc.

    However, etymological forms are:

objecte, ejecció, etc.

3. Logically, the combinations with /ža/, /žo/ and /žu/ are only represented by means of <j>

ja, ajut, ajornar, etc.

4. The conjugation of verb usually shows an alternation of spellings depending on the vowel coming after the consonant. Let’s take the verb passejar as an example:

<j>
<g>
passejo
passeja
passejava
passejaves
passejat
passeges
passegem
passegeu
passegi
passegis
