In initial position and after a consonant <x>
usually represents /š/:
xocolata,
xoriço, corxera, arxiu, etc.
However, there are exceptions:
marxista /mər’ksistə/
3. Between vowels and in final position, <ix> is instead used
calaix,
naix, etc.
NOTE: Valencian speakers tend to pronounce the /i/ of the <ix>
combination, but it is not pronounced in the rest of the linguistic domain.
