DEVOICING

1. Devoicing or Neutralisation is a phenomenon existing in Catalan, by which final voiced consonants are pronounced as if they were unvoiced (i.e. devoiced), so that the distinction voiced-unvoiced disappears, as it also happens in other languages, such as German or Czech.

2. It does not affect all consonants, but only the ones known as plosives and affricates according to the following chart:

Non-final position
Final position
b ~ p
d ~ t
g ~ k
dž ~ tš
z ~ s
dz ~ ts
p
t
k
s
ts

3. In this way, words having a voiced plosive consonant in final position (/b/, /d/, /g/) devoice it:

club
/’klup/
actitud
/əkti’tut/
mag
/’mak/
