SPELLING 'R' AND 'RR'



1. The consonant <r> sounds /r/ (soft) in the following cases:

- between vowels
cara, Pere, perill, etc.

- in final position (just in certain one-syllable words)
por, mar, etc.

- in final position it is usually soundless, though (especially in verbs)
saber, plorar, menjar etc.

- when it comes together with another consonant
prenc, article, etc.

2. The consonant <r> sounds strong /rr/ at the beginning of a word:
roig, rebre, etc.

3. The digraph <rr> sounds /rr/ between vowels (it is only used in this position)
carro, córrer, sorra, etc.
