The
consonant <x> sounds /ks/ or /gz/ in the following cases:
- between vowels (here mainly
/gz/)
existir, taxi, exigir,
etc.
- before a consonant
excel·lent,
tèxtil, exterior, etc.
- in final position
tòrax,
etc.
- when it comes together with
another consonant
prenc, article, etc.
2. The consonant <x> sounds
/š/ (see also PHONEME /š/)
- in initial position
xiular, xocolata, xiqueta
but there are many exceptions, mainly
regarding loanwords:
xenofòbia, xilòfon, etc.
- before a consonant:
arxiu, marxar, linxar, etc.
3. The digraph <ix> is used
between vowels and in final position for <š>
caixa, peix, creix, conèixer,
nàixer, calaix, etc.
4. The digraph <tx> is
pronounced /tš/ in alls positions, though it is not common in initial position;
it is less frequent in final position, though:
fatxa, cotxe, despatx, matx, etc.
5. The digraph <-ig> is also
pronounced /tš/, but it is solely in final position, very often with
one-syllable words
roig, veig, faig, lleig, puig,
goig, etc.
